Hi 300 --
My understanding is that Clinton and Obama are pretty much on the same page, kind of a Schwarzenegger page, on healthcare, and that Edwards is willing to go a bit farther towards single-payer.
I just watched Hillary on C-Span, in Iowa on Saturday saying we need universal healthcare. Of course, back in 1994 she thought her plan would do that. When in fact that healthcare plan was not sustainable, because it kept the private insurers in the game. Some smart operatives have said she would have been better off just pushing an easier-to-explain single-payer solution.
So — on C-Span she said that ALL the stakeholders need to get together: people of faith, hospitals, doctors, families, etc. — and find a solution to this country's healthcare mess.
She did not include insurance companies.
Maybe that was calculated. But it worked for me.
The mandated insurance seems to me kind of like making citizens buy "protection" from Lou and the guys.
Hillary's so smart, it was a joy listening to her speak intelligently on this issue.
Thanks, Kristen. Appreciate the blogging you're doing on this issue here.
