Joe Rice, Fighting Dems stand up to GOP smear machine

You wouldn't think the GOP would smear the patriotism or ethics of America's veterans. Wait. Nevermind.

Take the case of HD38 Democratic nominee Lt. Col. Joe Rice. First he endured mail and television attacks that called him soft on security.

Rice served three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. His Republican opponent is a dentist, who I hear is soft on plaque.

In a press conference at the Veterans Memorial, Rice said, "This attack plays on fear and misinformation. It is just wrong to say that my actions compromised our national security. As someone who served 22 years in the military, I find this kind of accusation deplorable."

The lies keep coming. In today's Rocky, Peter Blake reports:

Joe Rice, Democratic candidate in House District 38, has been compared to disgraced former congressman Mark Foley by Progress Colorado, a Republican "527" group.

Why? Because for 18 months from late 1993 to mid-1995 he was manager of Dismas House, a nonprofit halfway residence for ex-cons. Five years later Bob Sylvester, its founder and president, was found guilty of sexually abusing four inmates.

The fliers going to voters claims Rice "stood by a sexual predator."

An outraged Rice says the incidents involving Sylvester all occurred after he left, that no criminal activity took place while he was there and that he testified for the prosecution during Sylvester's trial.

The GOP's shameful attacks on Colorado veterans like Rice, Keely Marrs, Bill Winter and Jay Fawcett come on the heels of the news that Iraq is sliding towards chaos and the military has been instructed to abandon an abducted soldier. As Zappatero wrote, "Republicans specialize in empty rhetoric... [Y]ou'll never guess who supports the troops better. Democrats."

We have better candidates, having nominated more than 50 Fighting Dems to the U.S. congress. We have better ratings from DAV and IAVA. And we have better plans for Iraq and for national security.

All the GOP has is lies. Don't put up with them any longer.

Joe Rice and his family are lovely, caring and devoted to making America better.

It is absurd that Republicans are going after him, but more than absurd it is just sad. Sad that the Republican party has become so vile. Sad that the media no longer reports, but instead vomits right wing propaganda. And sad that a true American hero has to defend himself against such blatant untruths.
