Tancredo vs.... Rubenstein?
Somebody explain this one to me. CD7 Democratic candidate Herb Rubenstein's website claims that he will debate CD6 Republican Tom Tancredo after the election:
Today, in Watkins, Tancredo said he "would commit to a debate on immigration." He then added, "It is difficult during a campaign since you are running in another district, but right the campaign is over, we will do it."
I have no idea why Rubenstein would want to debate an unemployed malcontent. Because after November, that's what Mad Tom will be. Vote Bill Winter for CD6.
UPDATE: Today, Herb released a detailed position paper on immigration. You can read it in his latest newsletter.

Herb believes as Jefferson did that you confront extremists and expose the folly of their weird views. That is why he challenged Tancredo to debate. Herb made a donation to the Winter campaign. Did Lamm or Perlmutter also donate to Winter? Herb also debated Rick O'Donnell in December at a business group and whooped his ass.
While Herb may be a bit overzealous in challenging Tommy One-note to a debate, I'd rather see the Rubenstein brand of boldness in taking on rampant right-wing extremism than the kind of spinelessness and wishy-washiness that too many Democrats all over the country are showing us. Perhaps Herb's challenge will serve to paint Tommy into a corner and force him to debate Bill, a confrontation he's so far chickened out of. We definitely need Bill Winter for CD 6, and Herb Rubenstein for CD 7.
I appreciate Herb's support for our whole slate of Democratic candidates. I hope he isn't suggesting Mad Tom will be in-office after the election.
Good Afternoon. Bill Winter here. Let me reply to the above comments.
First, Ed Perlmutter and Herb Rubenstein have both donated to my campaign. Ed donated $200 and Herb donated $100 and I deeply appreciate both. Peggy Lamm has not donated. In addition, I should say that Ed has been a true friend and mentor to me from the first day of my campaign, and has really made a difference for me.
Second, I'll debate Tancredo anytime, anywhere, on any topic, but we will not limit it to immigration. Make no mistake, if I debate him on immigration I'll win and he will look like the extremist without solutions that he really is.
But the people of my district have many other concerns that should be addressed in Congress, like health care, education, water, the Iraq War, to name just a few.
The bottom line is that Tancredo is afraid to debate me because he knows he will lose, and lose badly. He knows he has no positions on any of these issues. He knows is uninformed on all of them, including immigration. And he knows that he does not really represent the people of CD6.
So I say anytime, anywhere, Tom. What are you afraid of?
And as for his offer to debate Herb AFTER the election, well, he's going to have plenty of time to do it, since he won't have a day job anymore!
Any time, anywhere, Tom!

I hear that Rubenstein has also given Winter a check and calls him regularly with ideas. He also called Winter and told him about the Rubenstein/Tancredo debate.
It is clear that Rubenstein is up to challenging Tancredo and all right wing Republicans in this State. Now, how Rubenstein got Winter to agree to a debate? I don't know the answer to that one, but the fact that he did undeniably shows me that he is willing to publicly stand up in front of a large audience, voice his opinions, and show us what he's got. We need more like him!!
I look forward to seeing his Immigration Policy this week. Let's see how Ed and Peggy respond to this.
I got an email from Rubenstein expressing his support for Bill Winter. Not that I really doubted it. I like them both for campaigning so fearlessly. Can't wait to see Mad Tom get beaten - twice!
I have seen all three CD7 candidates debate one another, and I personally endorse Herb Rubenstein. Rubenstein speaks clearly and directly on the war and health care, while the other candidates do not take strong stands on these important matters to the voters of the 7th District. I have complete faith in Rubenstein mostly because he is educated on the issues and has a strong stance on all of them, a commendable quality that I would like to see taken to our country's Congress.
People want change. Herb represents change. He is not backed by the establishment like his two Democratic opponents. He is going to be a force in Colorado politics and his surge in popularity over the past six months shows that he will be a force sooner rather than later.
