Winter fires consultant, hires anyone who gives a damn
Like TBTH and johne, I received an email from Democratic CD6 candidate Bill Winter this morning, detailing why he parted ways with his campaign manager. While I assume the email was sent to a large list, and portions have already popped up on Soapblox, I'm still not comfortable blogging the whole thing without Winter's approval. Here is a snippet:
America neither needs nor wants more of the same old politics as usual. It's time for us as a nation to rise above the old politics and the old ways and embrace new ways and stand up for what we believe in. I am going to Washington to represent the people of Colorado, and my ONLY job will be to make their lives better.
I have never, ever met a more courageous candidate than Bill Winter. Not coincidentally, I have never, ever met a more inspiring candidate than Bill Winter.
He's willing to take on the world's worst congressman in a district that's stacked heavily in the GOP's favor. And he's willing to ignore elitist political consultants and listen to the grassroots, the netroots, and everyday people.
If you have never donated to political campaign, this is the time.

I'm inspired by Bill, but I'm nervous for him. We definitely need more politicians with his ideals and ability to inspire. But if they don't run winning races they're not super-useful. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed hoping that Bill will make as many pragmatic and win-driven decisions as he does ideal-driven decisions.
Never a more courageous candidate? Never a more inspiring candidate? In no way am I saying this to denigrate Bill, whom I love dearly, but I've got two words for you: Mike. Miles. As one who's worked closely with Bill, I can tell you for a fact that Mike is the person from whom Bill draws his inspiration. I'm sure that Bill would tell you the same. In light of this news (I too got the email this morning) I for one will redouble my contributions of whatever time, energy, effort and financial resources I can possibly muster to ensure that I help send Bill Winter to Congress. I don't wish to dwell upon wouldas, couldas and shouldas, but I sure wish all these progressive blogs had been around two years ago.
I think Bill has made the right decision. I think his grassroots volunteers are terrific but I don't think his former professional team was running a winning campaign. Funding is important, of course, but when you are running against an incumbent you have to get yourself in the press, on radio ,on talk shows, etc. because if nobody has ever heard of you you aren't going to beat a brand name. As it stands now nobody but the Dem core has has a clue who is running against Tancredo. I hope his new team will take advantage of Tancredo's notoriety by getting quotes from Bill into every article written about Tancredo and getting him on every TV show that features interviews with Tancredo. He has a nationally known (nut case) opponent and ought to be using that to get media attention for himself. He also ought to be getting money from people all over the country who can't stand Tancredo in particular and want a Dem House in general. And he DOES have broad appeal. This is not a situation where avoiding Republicans like the plague so as not to remind them to go to the polls is going to work for us. His new team needs to make a lot of noise and build a lot a of bridges to non-Dems. It IS a Republican/Unaffiliated district and we aren't going to win it with the base alone. Miles might have been his inspiration, but he can have a much broader appeal than Miles ever had.
