Socialists, capitalists and everyone vs. Xcel
Normally, I'm not one to blame companies for making a profit. I love making a profit. Sometimes, it almost covers my health insurance. So when I hear about Xcel's windfall profits and relentless price gouging, I'm almost inclined to shrug. That's capitalism, right?
Except for one thing. Xcel is subsidized by the taxpayers. The White House's 2005 budget included $6 billion in giveaways for the oil and gas industry. So Xcel gets to take our taxes, raise our rates and declare record profits. What sort of insane system is that?
