Some good stuff about Ken Salazar

I have written some glowingly positive stuff about Colorado Democratic Senator Ken Salazar. (This post, for instance.) But recently I have been pretty disappointed in our junior senator. Especially his refusal to support censure, even though a majority of his constituents think President Bush broke the law. But just as I was about to abandon Salazar all together, I read this post at Soapblox, which points out that Salazar is better than Pete Coors. Which, of course, he is.

I also saw Salazar's votes, along side Allard's 100% rightie rubber stamp votes, in the paper today. As for censure, having been AG and knowing how these things work, I'm sure that Salazar is aware that you really need to have a legitimate, official investigation first in order to credibly establish grounds for censure. That, not censure, is step one. The Republicans obviously aren't going to give us that kind of investigation. They have the votes to do as they please because we haven't managed to elect enough Democrats. Our Dem Senators, including Salazar, HAVE been calling for a real investigation. If we are serious about getting an investigation, censure, good competent government, an end to secret deals behind closed doors with the public being told as little as possible or anything else on our wish list, the solution is to elect a whole bunch of Dems. Being less hard on fellow Dems would be helpful for starters.

F. Sage,

You must be joking. I have nearly 400 posts on this site. 99% are pro-Democratic party. Every day I get people telling me I am a loser because I'd support anyone with a D after their name.

Then one day I encourage Colorado Dems to make extra sure that Salazar knows we support censure and suddenly you find time to put up a dozen posts telling me to quit being so hard on "fellow Dems."

Did you really just start reading this site a week ago?

Ken Salazar is better than Pete Coors. Duh! What socio-political genius did it take to figure that out? Mr. Salazar has most certainly done some good things over in Washington, including helping the "Gang of 14" save the filibuster last fall. But before we fall at his feet, let's all remember, like Zappatero says, he ran, and was elected, as Democrat! These votes represent what he's SUPPOSED TO DO! We all know the choices he's made in the Senate that have been at least damaging to the Democratic party, and at worst have subjected less well-off people to the possibility of a lifetime of poverty. No kidding, read that bankruptcy bill, if you can stay awake.
The problem with Salazar is, we Dems, Libs and Progressives are left with half a loaf. Sometimes we can count on our Senator to do what we think is right, and sometimes we can expect him to inexplicably go off the reservation. And while half a loaf is of course better than none, isn't a whole loaf better than half? And why the hell do we keep resigning ourselves to settling for half? I realize there's nothing to be gained by dealing with wouldas, couldas and shouldas, he's there now for four plus more years, and that's fine with me. As long as he becomes more responsive to the people who put him there, and no, I don't mean Norm Brownstein.

One candidate has the guts to stand up against President Bush and this travesty in Iraq. The other two sites do not have even one word about Iraq.

For the last time, the point I was making was not just about Salazar. It's about making a big fuss over futile symbolic "statements" at the expense of actually DOING the only things that can force real change, you know, in the real world, not just in the world of manifestos. I've written Salazar many times complaining bitterly about his vote on the bankruptcy bill and a few others. Still, he's certainly more than half a loaf. If you look at his voting record its much closer to 80% of a loaf, higher than that lately. But that has NEVER been my main point. Please read Dionne's Sunday column. He makes the point I've been trying to make much better than I have and you won't be distracted from it by any mention of Salazar, I promise! And don't worry. This is my last posting on the subject!

Hey anonymous, we get it! You love Herb Rubenstein, and he is against the war. Love your passion, but if the topic has nothing to do with CD7 and Herb, then take a rest.
