Edwards: Post 5 of probably a lot
Here's another quote that rang in my mind as Edwards spoke. It's something I read in The Baffler a few years ago.
"Saying the lottery is a way to screw the poor misses the fundamental truth about poverty, which is that when you're poor, you get screwed all the time."

Edwards has the courage to say what many are afraid to see. The richest country in the world ignores growing poverty and excuses our guilt by saying the poor deserve their lot in life because they are lazy. Anyone who has spent time with the poor know the fallacy of this. Just read 'Nickle and Dimed in America' if you haven't seen poverty first hand. The middle class does it because they fear poverty and want to pretend it's not knocking at their door. It is. And the rich are satisified with their tax cuts and good luck and don't mind feeling superior.
The truth is the Bush Administration's investment cuts reduce the means to escape poverty by reducing school lunch programs, educational assisitance, etc. while giving tax breaks to the top 1%.
Clinton, on the other hand, introduced workfare from welfare and the Democratic war in poverty did reduce it by half in our country.
Edwards speaks to the ugly and tough issues facing our society with programs that provide fair opportunity and strengthen America. Many would rather ignore those, and stick to guns and gays, something they love and love to hate. I'll go with truth and the American promise of equal opportunity, privacy rights, and true patriotism any day. Good for Edwards.
