Brokeback Greeley

Brokeback Mountain is a powerful film. How could it not be? Great director. Majestic setting. Timeless story of unfufilled love. But it's not playing so well with cowboys in Greeley, according to the Tribune. I'm going to defend the cowboys on this one. There are a lot of people out there who didn't enjoy The Notebook, Phantom of the Opera or Moulin Rouge. They shouldn't be forced to see a movie they know they're going to hate just to prove they're not homophobic.

"From what I've read, I don't want to see it just because of what it's about," said Josh Webb, 24, of Platteville. "It's wrong. It gives a wrong image of what men are, should be. It's just wrong."
----
"...what men are, should be..."

God save me from that kind of mentality.

I'll decide what I 'am' and 'should be', thank you very much. Based on the quality of the rough-and-tough athletes I've met in my life, they routinely fall short of the mark and are most definitely not the folks I'd look to for guidance on how to live a life.

Platteville's an ignorant little backwater, IMHO. Getting opinions about a movie featuring gay issues from folks at a stock show is roughly akin to handing out copies of Malcom X's biography at a Ku Klux Klan meeting and asking for reviews. Talk about clueless...

And who's 'forcing' the 'cowboys' to see it?

Frankly they SHOULD - the scenes near the end showing Jack's murder as well as the older man who'd been 'dragged by his pecker till it tore off'. Ignorance breeds intolerance and intolerance leads to violence.

I've got to say I don't understand what this article, or this post, was really about. From reading your comment about how cowboys shouldn't be "forced" to see it, I thought someone was actually forcing them. But no. It's just about how some people at a farm show don't want to see it because "gay cowboys simply wouldn't exist". Guess what, chief? They do. Whether you want them to or not, or whether you'd kill them when you found out about it, that's another story.

I guess I can understand why the Greeley paper would write an article about it, since it's getting so much national attention (President Bush getting asked about it was hilarious, imo). Personally, I thought it was a powerful movie. On the other hand, I'm not interested in seeing "King Kong" because it's 3.5 hours long. But if any of my loved ones want to see it, I might go. Now I'm off to write a post about how wrong it is to be "forced" to see "King Kong"...

The confusion here seems to be based around two things:

1. An unclear transition from the Greeley story to my own personal feelings about the movie.

2. My usage of the word "forced," when actual I meant something like "guilt tripped." As in, I didn't want to see Beaches, but my wife guilt-tripped me into it.

*nod*

Sometimes we need to be 'forced' to learn.

I wasn't eager to see the film either, but the final truth that I came away with was that two people can love each other despite differences - no matter what they are.

The final scene is simply heartbreaking. Anyone that can see that and not be moved is simply dead in their heart.

God is Love. Whenever you SEE Love, you see God. At least I think so.

What reason is given for Jesus' first coming?

"For God so loved the World He gave His only Son"

We must learn to accept one another or surely the darkness will take us all.

By GOD I'll go down fighting the Darkness, always.
I think that's what He'd want.

Cheers my friends.
Seek Joy. Choose Love.
