Udall, Allard and Tancredo in '08

The Rocky Mountain News is highlighting the '08 Senate race already. Conventional wisdom is that Allard will renounce his self-imposed term limits and defend his seat. The first Dem in the race is Boulder Repre. Mark Udall, who announced his candidacy sometime before I was born. Udall already has amassed quite a warchest, and he probably won't have to blow much of it defending his seat in liberal-leaning Boulder in '06. So he could be quite a Senate candidate in '08. (Although judging by his recent appearance on The Colbert Report, he doesn't have much of a sense of humor.)

The Rocky also mentions potential challengers like Democrats Repre. Diana DeGette, Mayor John Hickenlooper and Repre. John Salazar and Republicans such as Gov. Bill Owens and former Repre. Scott McInnis. But who is the real star of the article? None other than Tom Tancredo, who has also "been toying with the idea of a longshot presidential campaign in 2008."

Not too long ago, I heard a rumor that the Republicans were busily trying to pick The Next Big issue To Distract Everyone From The Mess Bush Has Created. According to AM760, Bush is set to speak about immigration at a military base in Arizona. According to Republican blogger Clay Calhoun, The Republican Study Committee of Colorado held a hearing on illegal immigration on November 16. And according to the Denver papers, Tom Tancredo's strong stance on immigration is enough to make him a Presidential candidate. So I guess TNBITDEFTMBHC has been decided.

Tancredo appeals only to the dark side of human nature. Those that vote for him confuse tough talk with smart talk, and confuse thoughtless revenge with the path to victory.

I had to hear Tancredo myself to try to understand his political success. Went to a town hall meeting in a church where he spoke. He opened with a nice prayer, then in a house of God, a house of God no less, repeated his call to bomb mosques if there is ever another terrorist attack, then he sped out the side door without allowing questions. Talk about giving aid and comfort to the enemy. Whose payroll is he on. No doubt the terrorists love this guy. The vast majority of Muslums are not with the terroits but if we bomb Mecca the whole world would turn against us. The terrorists are now bombing mosques so he suggests we do the same. Dumb idea Tom. Ask yourself, if the terrorists bomb Saint Peters, would the Christians back off and hide, or come out stronger.

His one issue, immigration is an important one, but it's his only issue, and he has the wrong solutions to that one as well.

What idiots vote for this guy.

Let's start a draft Tancredo for President campaign! He can be their Ralph Nader! Why should Dems be the only ones losing votes to candidates everybody knows can't possibly win? I absolutely LOVE Tancredo for President. Maybe Pat Robertson, too! A loony third party candidate worked so well in getting Bill Clinton elected, contributing to an Elect Tancredo Fund would be money well spent. In fact, didn't Republicans contribute to Nader?

F. Sage, that is a positively brilliant idea. At the very least, TT would drag the Republican primary contenders further right than they could afford to go.

Thanks, 300 spartan's gym, but it's kind of hard, not to mention scary, to imagine the Republican primaries going "farther right than they could afford to go"! I think they'd have to steal away the John Birch society candidate. Incidently, one of my husband's cousins by marriage sent us a campaign solicitation for the third party candidate the Birchers supported in '04. Apparently GW wasn't right enough for her. I don't know if Tancredo is either!
