"Ok, here is the issue. Standing up for ourselves as Democrats and not allowing the Repugs to define us. How do we define ourselves and continue to preach to our 'choir' until our choir can sing the right song!"

We should be saying "singing the LEFT song," correct? This is a tough one - we want a unified voice and consistent message, but as liberals we're all so different. I would suggest sticking to "we care about people - ALL people."

I'll throw my two cents in. If I had to write a tag for the Dems it'd be, "The party for people who work." That slogan appeals to everybody, because I have never met anybody who didn't feel they were hard working. And it demonizes the Republicans as the party that rewards "wealth, not work."
Come to the meeting at 7 pm. on Thursday, Nov 3rd. We're read to start singing. We'll write the music and the lyrics.
I feel that I'm a Democrat because I care about people, and especially opportunities for all people. But this attitude is often interpreted as "taking care of people" and that doesn't seem to appeal to many as they are "hardworking" and feel it is a struggle today to just take care of oneself and family. So I agree with 300 Spartans that some sort of message that Democrats are of the party that supports people's pursuit of the "American Dream" by working and building community may attract more moderate voters.
"Cleaning up Republican messes for more than 50 years."
Been thinking about last night's meeting and the plunging approval rates for Bush, plunging numbers of people who think he's honest, disgust with DeLay, Abramoff, Frist, Libby, Rove, the VP and on and on and plunging numbers of people who think we're on the right track in general. Articles are popping up about how people just feel the wheels are coming off.
Besides the loss of faith in the decision to go to war in Iraq, it's much more than that or any other one thing. It's that people are losing faith in the American dream. We used to believe that this was a country in which ordinary people could make it, have a nice life and an even better one for their children by working hard and playing by the rules. Now we see that it takes more and more hard work just to keep from going under, jobs for the next generation are disappearing and the only people who are prospering are a tiny corporate elite that seems to get away with bending, breaking or ignoring the rules, buying any legislation they want, and hoarding all the wealth and power our hard work produces.
I think our big message needs to be that we need to fight to bring back the American dream. We need to demand government that stands up for the great, ordinary American people who DO work hard and play by the rules. We need to get back to government that really is of the people, by the people and FOR the people, the people who make this country work. Don't quite know how to fit it on a bumper sticker, but someone good at that sort of thing probably could. Whatever our message it has to be very centralized, sent out to all from the national level like the Republicans always manage to do.
