Local reaction to Wilkerson's comments
Editorandpublisher.com reports that Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson, former chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell, has proof that the White House has sanctioned prisoner abuse.
"In an interview for National Public Radio he (Wilkerson) charged that Vice President Cheney's office--and new chief aide David Addingtoon--was responsible for directives which led to U.S soldiers abusing prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan. Wilkerson said he had some hard evidence: a trail of memos and directives authorizing questionable detention practices up through Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld's office directly to Cheney's staff."
Betty Harris of HD38 emailed me a reaction statement that read, in part, "What does it say about our government that the Bush administration feels that they can torture detainees (prisoners of war) without reproach? ... What does it say about us as Americans that we've allowed our government to carry out these acts and then allowed the military leaders to blame it on our soldiers? ... How can we consider ourselves a Christian nation? The White House has a disconnect between our faith and our actions. It's time to ask and answer the hard questions."

Quote from Washington Post:
"Last winter, when Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.Va.), vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, began pushing to have the full committee briefed on the CIA's interrogation practices, Cheney called him to the White House to urge that he drop the matter, said three U.S. officials."
From thewashingtonnote.com:
"Republican Majority Leader Bill Frist and House Speaker Dennis Hastert have asked House Intel Committee Chairman Peter Hoekstra and Senate Intel Committee Chairman Pat Roberts NOT to look into the subject of the hidden sites America has for secretly holding prisoners and detainees -- but to look into who LEAKED that information to Dana Priest at the Washington Post."
