Joe Rice for Colorado House in 2006
Take a tour of America via Broadway. Start in Denver and all you see are Dem yard signs and a few Green Party folks waving banners outside the state capitol. At about Evans, you begin to see elephants and when you get past Belleview to Littleton, you are buried a thick blanket of red.
But despite the Republican stranglehold on voter registration in Littleton, the Democrats down there sometimes almost nearly barely pull a rabbit out of their hat. Like in 2004, when State Senate candidate Jared Ingwalson (who I call "Dad") finished with something like 49.99999999% of the vote.
Which is a good sign for Lt. Co. Joe Rice. He is a Democrat running for Littleton's seat in the Colorado House in 2006. But first Rice is heading back to Iraq, where he is going to serve his third tour of duty.
This is a thread to discuss Rice and debate his candidacy.

In the Rocky Mt. News 10/15/05, page 12C,ran was a thoughtful commentary article written by Joe Rice about the Iraqi constitution. Below it was Peter Blakes column detailing Joe's accomplishments that gave an indication of his strong sense of ethics. Sounds like we may have a politician in the ring with guts, experience, and integrity. About time!
For too long Republicans have been allowed to label themselves the party of patriotism and morality, while effectively painting Democrats as faithless America-haters.
Of course we know these ridiculous suppositions to be false. But they do present political challenges for Dems in how we communicate our values. How do get across to the independent voter that the hard-right policies of the current administration have in fact proved to be unpatriotic and immoral? How do we communicate the idea that we are Democrats for the very reason we are strongly patriotic, and because of what many of us learned in Sunday school?
As a family man who has served his country his entire adult life, Rice is the kind of Democratic candidate who can effectively challenge these assumptions and communicate our message – because he’s actually BEEN THERE!
Rice is the kind of principled, pragmatic, PATRIOTIC leader who will focus on what’s really important, and not inflammatory wedge issues that pit neighbor against neighbor and exploit our differences.
